Cynefin: Culturally and ethnically diverse Wales

Cynefin: A culturally and ethnically diverse Wales is for teachers in primary, secondary and special schools who want to explore the ethnic history and development of Wales as a multicultural society. It was built on the basis of the approach of the Leading Creative Schools Scheme, and it links the curriculum to the real world of learners and their communities.

Cynefin: culturally and ethnically diverse Wales draws upon the power of creative learning approaches and pedagogical principles used within the Lead Creative Schools scheme. It offers schools the opportunity to work with diverse Creative Professionals to explore the ethnic diversity in Wales, past and present and the contributions this makes to society and culture.

The schools included are Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Pontardawe, Swansea where I worked with Molara Awen and Creative Practitioners Arnold Matsena, Yvonne Howard and Bevin Magama and Ysgol Gynradd Llechryd, Cardigan and Creative Practitioner Yvonne Howard, visitors Race Council Cymru https://racecouncilcymru.org.uk/ and a visit to The National Museum’s Reframing Picton Project https://museum.wales/about-us/Black-lives-matter/reframing-picton/

This project has been an eye opening experience but has been an absolute joy to work collaboratively with creative practitioners and the classroom pupils. I have to praise the commitment to the project and the energy that was brought to the weekly workshops. It certainly feels like the start of a journey in the school that will only grow in confidence and have a true impact on the implementation of diversity within the curriculum. The journey the pupils have been on is something quite special. I feel that they have been exposed to a rich and broad view of history and to be able to work with and learn from creative practitioners. Lisa Evans
